A few years ago, I went to the local gym and due to familiar surroundings of this gym that I had been patronising for the last 3 years. I placed my belonging in the locker. After the workout and a shower, I came out, saw the locker open, and thought to myself, "Funny, I thought I locked the locker." Hmm. I get dressed and just flipped the wallet to make sure all was in order. Everything looked okay - all cards (credit card and social security card) were in place.

A few weeks later, my credit card bill came - a whooping bill of $14,000! I quickly called the local bank that issued me the credit card and started yelling at them saying that I did not make any transactions during this period. The customer care personnel verified that there was no mistake in the system and asked if my card had been stolen.

"No," I said to her, but then took out his wallet, pulled out the credit card, and yep - I should have guessed it - a switch had been made. An expired similar credit card from the same bank was in the wallet. The thief broke into his locker at the gym and switched cards.

The bank told me since I did not report the card missing earlier, I would have to pay the amount owed to them. I had to pay a ridiciously sum of $9 grand for items I did not buy!

I was furious and mad and thought how come this is happening to me. I swallow this lesson in pain and asked myself...

Why were there no calls made to verify the amount swiped? Later, the bank told me that small amounts rarely trigger a "warning bell". It just so happens that all the small amounts added up to big one!

Do I have a choice? Of course I have a choice, but did I make that choice?

Fighting this identity theft thing was futile. They seems to be everywhere. Even though I may have take the necessary precautions, identity thieves still reappears out of nowhere.
