Beware the pretty face....most 911 look good of course. But plenty of these eighties 911 can have hidden major problems and are to be avoided.
Don't let me put you off buying. There are enough good, genuine 911 that will be worth their money. Just be aware that some are not what they seem. In your buyers guide you will find advice and tips that will help you reveal the truth. Here are just a few topics;
Accident repairs; Of course many cars have accidents, usually its the insurance company paying for the repair and here lies the problem. They will be wanting the repair done as cheaply as possible. For a body shop its very easy to cut corners, to replace the outer panels and leave the 'inner structure' damaged or the corrosion protection compromised.
Therefore it's vital that you as a buyer can decide if a 911 has been damaged, the quality of the repair and the true extent of that damage. I explain how you can almost always spot this in minutes.
Corrosion; Yes 911 of this age can and do corrode. If you live in a hot climate you might not see this as often as we in Europe do. The bodies were galvanized from new and well protected, but some will be rusty in hidden areas. Also if a panel has been previously repaired, the continued integrity of the corrosion protection and galvanizing is often compromised. You will find out where to check.
Clocking. Changing the true mileage. This is rather common, you will learn in your buyers guide several ways you can often uncover a clocked 911. It's not the usual advice about worn pedal rubbers and similar, after all they are only a few dollars to replace. I reveal some of the dirty tricks....
Service History. As you will appreciate the service history for a 911 is a valuable asset, but I have seen a fair number forged. Don't let this catch you out.
Poor health. Clearly, because of their age these 911 will be in a variety of conditions, its important you know what you are really getting....and if there are big bills waiting.

You can find genuinely good 911 (not simply the pretty). They can be stunningly well preserved. You can find them with zero corrosion, with a good history, running strong, needing little more than a caring new home. These are the best ones to go for.
